Sealants

Sealants

Pit and fissure sealants are a preventive dental treatment used to protect the deep grooves and crevices on the chewing surfaces of teeth. Here’s a brief note on pit and fissure sealants:
1. Purpose: Pit and fissure sealants are applied to the permanent back teeth (molars and premolars) to create a protective barrier on the chewing surfaces. These teeth have deep grooves and fissures that are prone to trapping food particles and bacteria, making them more susceptible to tooth decay. Sealants help to seal off these vulnerable areas, reducing the risk of cavities.
2. Composition: Pit and fissure sealants are typically made of a resin material that flows into the grooves and fissures of the teeth. The resin is usually clear or tooth-coloured, making the sealant blend in with the natural tooth colour.
3. Procedure: The application of pit and fissure sealants is a quick and painless procedure that can be performed by a dentist. The steps involved are as follows:
  •  Cleaning: The teeth to be sealed are thoroughly cleaned and dried.
  • Isolation: The teeth are isolated to keep them dry during the application process. A cotton roll or dental dam may be used.
  • Acid Etching: A mild acid solution is applied to the tooth surface to create a rougher texture that helps the sealant bond securely to the tooth.
  • Sealant Application: The sealant material is carefully painted onto the tooth surfaces, flowing into the grooves and fissures. It is then hardened using a special light or by self-curing, depending on the type of sealant used.
  • Evaluation: The dentist or dental hygienist checks the sealant for proper placement and makes any necessary adjustments.
1. Effectiveness: Pit and fissure sealants effectively prevent tooth decay by creating a physical barrier that blocks food particles and bacteria from getting trapped in the grooves of the teeth. They provide long-lasting protection against cavities, particularly in children and teenagers who may have difficulty maintaining thorough oral hygiene in these hard-to-reach areas.
2. Lifespan and Maintenance: Sealants can last for several years before they may need to be reapplied. Regular dental check-ups are important to monitor the condition of the sealants and determine if any touch-ups or reapplication is necessary. It’s also important to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings, to ensure the overall health of the teeth and gums.
Pit and fissure sealants are a valuable preventive measure in maintaining optimal oral health, especially for individuals with deep grooves and fissures on their back teeth. Consult with a dentist to determine if sealants are recommended for you or your child and to schedule the application procedure.
